Artist Profile - renate West

Professional artist. BA (Hons) Art and Design (Hamburg). T-Dip (Southampton). Psychotherapist. Art therapist. Business diploma.
I always start a painting with an idea but once started the ultimate aim is to let go, dig deep into the subconscious and achieve spontaneity, free from confining principles;  to establish an equal partnership between emotion, expression and experimentation with the medium. Always allowing the moment to dictate the development of the painting.

My main medium is acrylic but I use charcoal for my life drawings. I am influenced by factors like the post-war years in Germany, traumatic life experiences, people, society, nature, and most of all emotions. I like to challenge people’s ways of thinking.
