Many viewers are surprised by the variety of my work and curious about the reason why. Well, here is the reason:
I want to stay me in my work, and me has many facets. People have often told me they recognise my work, despite my range of style. Yes, I could concentrate on one style of work that has sold well; although despite the variety of my work, it has always sold. For me, painting is not mainly about selling but exploring, challenging myself, taking risks, continuously moving forward, and discovering all the different facets of me and the world around me. Selling is important, of course, but I am not willing to put myself under the pressure to only produce work to sell. I have moved past that limitation and I accept the possibility that my work may not sell, which so far hasn't happened. The exciting part for the viewer is that they never know what is coming next, and neither do I!

What do I want to say through my work?
To challenge the viewer to review their way of thinking. To address the emotions that we as a society are continuously confronted with; yet too often repress, resulting in ever more mental health issues and problems in our society. The other aspect of my work is positivity. There are so many negative things happening in the world today: war, aggression, suffering, violence, hardship, damage to the environment, climate change, etc. I notice that people find it difficult to think positively. We have become a pessimistic society. The media pushes negative stories to the forefront, making it easy to give in to despair. People forget that every negative has a positive, otherwise the negative would not be worthy of comment. People forget to look for the positives, and the beauty that is still around us; after a time, they forget how to see it. I find it very important to see the positive and the beauty to re-balance ourselves. When I talk to people, I find often there is an attitude of resigned negativity; hopelessness with feelings of an inability to change anything. That is what I hope to challenge with my work. My work expresses how I feel about my surroundings: the differing seasons, landscapes, and cities. It is all about how I feel when I start a painting or the reason why I start a painting — i.e. the mood I am in. I aim to let this come across in my work. There is a lot of spontaneity to my work, I do not want to think too much but let it come from inside me, and then there comes the point when the painting begins to realise itself and tells me where to go. Many of my customers have told me that my work has soul. An apt description, I think. There is art that is disturbing, frightful even.
There is art that is thought provoking, challenging, And there is art that is soothing for the soul. With so much violence, war, and extreme weather catastrophes happening worldwide, The latter art is now needed. Art in any form, has now perhaps more than ever before, The task to be positive, To inspire hope and an awareness that not all is doom and gloom. That there is always beauty in any form around us. We just have to look for it and never stop looking. |
